The 1995 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent (Buy on eBay) appeared 40 years after the famous 1955 Doubled Die. Even though the 1995 version was much less dramatic, it still generated strong interest and created a rush to search rolls and bags of new cents, as well as pocket change.
The doubled die can be detected by examining some of the lettering on the obverse of the coin. Specifically, the 1995 Doubled Die will show doubling in “LIBERTY” and the words “IN GOD”. The most noticeable area of doubling appears for the letters “BE” of “LIBERTY”.
After large numbers of double dies started turning up through searches, the 1995 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent lost some of its appeal. Current estimates suggest that as many as 500,000 examples may have been struck. These coins carry a premium, although prices remain relatively affordable. Most collectors focus on Gem BU or third party graded examples of the coin.
